Miniatures and Small Works

Smalls

The rules for true miniatures: no larger than 1/6 life size, and less than 25 square inches. The butterfly is about life size, so he’s a “small work.” The landscapes are “miniatures.” I don’t know what to call big bugs.

Small paintings with big, bold colors. Use in small spaces or in a group.

California Tortoiseshell
In early fall, swarms of these bright little guys appeared at a high-altitude viewpoint near Mt. St. Helens.

Apple and Two Pears
Found some pears fallen from a neighborhood tree, one oddly shaped. The old apple is from our own tree. They look neat on an old towel in the sun.

Windfalls
Three fallen apples from our own tree, all hosting worms. A quick study in red and green before they were thrown in the compost bin.

Black-tailed Bumblebee
This little fuzzball loves rhododendrons. The orange, yellow and black against the brilliant pink flowers was fun to paint.
